Privacy Policy
From day one, the plan was simple: collect as little as possible and keep your work on your device. No need for data collection, accounts, logins etc.
- No account required
- We don’t sell or share personal information
The ButterKit App
The ButterKit app runs entirely on your Mac. No accounts or personal information required. App diagnostics are optional and can be disabled in settings.
- App diagnostics (optional). ButterKit collects basic, non-personal usage analytics via TelemetryDeck and PostHog to help us squash bugs, and improve features. PostHog data is hosted in the EU (Frankfurt). Analytics traffic may be routed through Cloudflare, a third-party infrastructure provider, to improve reliability and delivery. No personally identifiable information is collected: visitor identifiers are anonymized using hashed IDs. You can opt out of analytics anytime in ButterKit app Settings.
- iCloud is optional. If you choose to store documents in iCloud, your data is stored securely with Apple and covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- OpenAI and cloud models are optional. You may choose to connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, or other cloud providers (e.g. for translations). If enabled, requests are handled by the respective cloud provider. ButterKit works without it.
- Payment processors. ButterKit’s Merchant of Record is Lemon Squeezy. When you purchase or activate a license, your data is handled by the Lemon Squeezy Privacy Policy. The ButterKit app may occasionally check the installed license key to ensure it’s valid.
- Mac App Store purchases. When purchasing on the Mac App Store, licensing, in-app purchases, and related data are handled by Apple and RevenueCat. See Apple’s Privacy Policy and RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy.
The ButterKit Website
The butterkit.app website uses standard web analytics to improve the site experience.
- Website analytics. The website uses PostHog for website metrics. PostHog runs in cookieless mode with server hash mode enabled: no cookies or local storage, and unique visitors are counted via a privacy-preserving server-side hash. Your IP address is hashed into the identifier and stripped before processing, so it cannot be reversed into personal data. PostHog data is hosted in the EU (Frankfurt). PostHog traffic may be routed through Cloudflare, a third-party infrastructure provider. No personally identifiable information is collected: visitor identifiers are anonymized using hashed IDs. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC), and you can change your preference anytime in the website footer via Cookie Preferences.
California Privacy Notice (CPRA)
We do not sell or share personal information as defined by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).
We use analytics and conversion measurement only.
- Opt-out signals: We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC). If GPC is enabled in your browser, we treat it as an opt-out.
- Change your choice anytime: Cookie Preferences
If our practices change (e.g., we enable cross-context behavioral advertising/retargeting), we will update this notice and provide a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” option.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as ButterKit improves. When we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date. If anything ever requires new data from you, we’ll explain it plainly and let you choose.
